Issue

When creating a backup job and browsing the selection list for a remote Microsoft Exchange 2007 64-Bit server, the Information Store is not listed in the selection list

Cause

Following is a list of possible causes for this error message :

1. Services are not running under the correct accounts.

2. Debug output for Exchange Remote Agent shows the following:

bedsxchg.dll could not be loaded: The specified module could not be found.
bedsxese.dll could not be loaded: (null) is not a valid Win32 application.
bedsmbox.dll could not be loaded: (null) is not a valid Win32 application.
bedspush.dll could not be loaded: The specified module could not be found.

3. Account used to backup exchange databases does not have following rights:
   * Exchange Organization Administrators

The Backup Exec "Logon Account" being used to backup Exchange is an not a explicit member of the Local Administrators group of the Exchange 2007 server (implied membership via Domain Admins for example may not be sufficient)
   * The Backup Exec "Logon Account" mailbox being used to backup Exchange is hidden from the Global Address List.
   * the Backup Exec "Logon Account" being used to backup Exchange is NOT Unique within Exchange Organization.

 4. The version of mapi32.dll is incorrect on the Exchange server.

Solution

 1. Confirm the Servcies are running with the correct accounts.

On the Media Server ,ensure all Backup Exec services (except Backup Exec Remote Agent) are running under Domain Administrator account while the Backup Exec Remote Agent service and SQL service for Backup Exec is running under Local System Account.

On the Exchange Server, ensure the Backup Exec Remote Agent service is running under the Local System Account.

If these services are not running under proper logon account, please modify them to use the proper credentials as above and restart all Backup Exec services.

Confirm the listed .DLL files exist in the Backup Exec file path.

3. Please verify that the account used to backup exchange databases has following rights:
Exchange 2007 has the following predefined groups that manage Exchange configuration data:
   * Exchange Organization Administrators
For more Information on creating a Unique Account, refer to document TECH51740 in Related Documents section below.

Ensure that the Backup Exec "Logon Account" being used to backup Exchange is an explicit member of the Local Administrators group of the Exchange 2007 server (implied membership via Domain Admins for example may not be sufficient)
   * Verify that the Backup Exec "Logon Account" mailbox being used to backup Exchange is not hidden from the Global Address List.
   * Verify that the Backup Exec "Logon Account" being used to backup Exchange is Unique within Exchange Organization.  For Example the account "admin" is not Unique.

4. Add the following registry key on the Backup Exec media server
Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.
Key :HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VirtFile
Type DWORD
Value: VFF Extended Timeout
set the VFF Extended Timeout to 600 seconds (i.e. 600 Decimal value).
Restart the Backup Exec services and browse the Exchange information store.

 5. Check the version of mapi32.dll of the Exchange server.
Verify the version is the 64-Bit version using the Dependency Walker tool for each .dll file listed below by making sure it displays "x64" under the CPU column (Figure 2):
Files to check:
  • bedsxchg.dll
  • bedsxese.dll
  • bedsmbox.dll

Figure 2.

If the 32-Bit version is listed, replace with the 64-Bit version which can be found on the Microsoft Exchange 2007 installation disk or by re-downloading the MAPI/CD.
Note that for MAPI to load correctly, the version of MAPI32.dll under c:\windows\system32 should match the version of MAPISTUB.dll under the same folder.
If that is not the case, download the file attached at the end of this article. Uncompress the folder and copy the dll files in the c:\windows\system folder replacing any existing version.

Restart the Remote Agent service on the Exchange server.

Browse selections list again to confirm if "Microsoft Information Store" is now listed.

6. Ensure all prerequisites are fulfilled as per the below document
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH51740  - If the MAPI32 version is correct on both the Media server and Exchange Server depending upon the architecture and still the Information Store is not visible in backup selections, follow the below steps

7. If the above steps do not resolve the issue then uninstall remote agent on exchange server and perform a push install of the remote agent.

NOTE: Backup Exec(BE) 11d revision 6235 does not support backing up local or remote Exchange 2007 and an Upgrade to BE 11d revision 7170 and later is required which can be downloaded from the below URL
