Backup of Exchange 2003/2007 database configured in Microsoft Cluster or Cluster Continuous Replication (CCR) setup fails with an error "Access to the device is not authorized with this edition of Backup Exec"

Error

V-79-57344-34110 - AOFO: Initialization failure on: "Microsoft Information Store". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
Snapshot provider error (0xE000FE3C): Access to the device is not authorized with this edition of Backup Exec.

Cause

In case of Exchange 2003 this problem will come up if Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Systems service is not running under Local System Account on passive node of the cluster.

In case of Exchange 2007 configured in CCR setup, when the backup is targeted to run from passive node the backup fails with this error.

Solution

1. For Exchange 2003:

To resolve the issue make sure that Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Systems service is running under Local System Account on all nodes of the Cluster.

2. For Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010:

To resolve this problem make sure that Backup Exec Remote Agent service is running under Local System Account on all nodes of the Exchange 2007 CCR setup. If the service is not running under Local System Account change the logon account for the service to Local System Account and restart the service.

This issue may not occur if the backups are targeted to run from Active Node.
