Problem

An Exchange mailbox restore from a tape backup set fails with the error "The media identifier does not represent a valid medium occurs when attempting to restore a Granular Restore Technology (GRT) Backup from tape media"

Error

Final error: 0x10cc - The media identifier does not represent a valid medium

Solution

Upon running a mailbox restore from a Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) enabled backup set on tape, the restore may fail with the above error.

Reason:

The above error is likely to occur if the media containing the backup set shows a question mark against its media label. (Figure 1)

Within the Devices tab under the Backup Exec console, the properties of the tape drive will show an incorrect media type listed. (Figure 2)

Resolution:

1. Disable and delete the device from the Backup Exec console.

2. Reinstall the device drivers for the device and reboot server.  Symantec recommend using the latest Symantec Device Drivers rather than manufacturer's own drivers.  Follow this link, change File Types drop-down to 'Driver' and then select your Product Version.  http://www.symantec.com/business/support/downloads.jsp?pid=15047

3. Upon reboot make sure that the device properties list the media type correctly. If it shows correctly proceed to run the restore.

4. If device still fails to display the media type contact the hardware vendor.
