Backups appear to hang when attempting to create a Snapshot using VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service)

Error

20071003 10:08:03 VSS E12310 NA Volume Shadow Copy Service error: The shadow copy could not be committed - operation timed out. Error context: DeviceIoControl(\\?\Volume{da3c46c6-1212-11db-9ed4-000bcd694cc0} - 000000E4,0x0053c010,000391B8,0,0003A1C0,4096,[0]).

Solution

One possible resolution is to re-register the Volume Shadow Copy DLL's as shown below:

Note: The following procedure to re-register the Volume Shadow Copy service DLL's is for Windows 2003 ONLY:

CD to Windows\System32
Net stop vss
Net stop swprv

regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 vss_ps.dll

Vssvc /Register

regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll

regsvr32 es.dll
regsvr32 stdprov.dll
regsvr32 vssui.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 msxml4.dll

Reboot the server.

After reboot, open a command prompt and run:
vssadmin list writers
(All writers should now show as Stable, No error)

A Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) update package is available for Windows Server 2003
 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;940349

For Windows 2008 server, a reboot should generally reset all VSS related files and re-registering them manually is not recommended.
