Symantec Backup Exec for Windows Servers installation fails with the error "V-225-218: A BEDB database was found on SQL server SERVERNAME\BKUPEXEC. This SQL server cannot be used as a BEWS database server"

Error

V-225-218: A BEDB database was found on SQL server SERVERNAME\BKUPEXEC. This SQL server cannot be used as a BEWS database server. The Backup Exec installation log (bkupinst.htm) reports the above error while upgrading the Backup Exec installation or while reinstalling Backup Exec for Windows Servers.

Cause

The Backup Exec installation attempts to connect to the existing SQL instance, to which a Backup Exec Database (BEDB) is already attached. This issue can occur if the BEDB from the previous Backup Exec installation is still associated with the same SQL instance

Solution

Detach the Backup Exec database from the existing SQL instance and perform the installation again:

To detach the BEDB database using SQL Enterprise Manager:
1. Open the SQL Enterprise manager, expand the Server Group, and then expand the Server.
2. Expand Databases and right-click on the BEDB database.
3. Select All Tasks | Detach database (Figure 1)
Figure 1

4. Click OK to confirm.
Now re-run the installation.
