DOCUMENTATION: How is the NetBackup 6.5.2 client installed on a Mac OS X 10.5 ("Leopard") server?

Solution

Due to changes in the Mac OS X operating system, local installation of the NetBackup 6.5 Mac OS X 10.4 ("Tiger") client fails on systems where version 10.5 ("Leopard") is installed.

Support for Mac OS X 10.5 began with the NetBackup 6.5.2 release update.  A special installer for Mac OS X 10.5 was developed (TechFile 304434, linked below).  Local installation of the client is possible by using this installer.  Remote installation of the client is also possible if the Mac client is installed on a UNIX server, provided that the client has been updated to version 6.5.2.

Locally installing the client:
The following procedure installs the NetBackup client software on a local Mac OS X 10.5 client.

1. Download NB_MAC_6.5.2.tar_304434.gz (linked below) into the /tmp directory of the intended Mac OS X 10.5 client.

2. Extract the binary using the following command:
$ tar xfz NB_MAC_6.5.2.tar_304434.gz

This will create the following directory: NB_6.5.2_MAC10.5_20080514

3. Change directories to the new directory:
$ cd NB_6.5.2_MAC10.5_20080514

4. Enter the following command to execute the installation script:
$ sudo ./install

6. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

Remotely installing the client:
The remote ("push") installation from the master server will work as well, provided the Mac client on the master has been upgraded to version 6.5.2.  This can be checked by examining the version file from the master server:

# cat /usr/openv/netbackup/client/MACINTOSH/MacOSX10.4/version
NetBackup-MacOSX10.4 6.5.2

If the MACINTOSH or MacOSX10.4 subdirectory do not exist, the 6.5 Mac client must be installed from the media kit; then, the 6.5.2 client update must be applied.  Consult page 95 of the NetBackup 6.5 Installation Guide for UNIX and Linux (TechNote 290199, linked below) for more information on adding new clients to an existing installation.

The client must be made known in the NetBackup environment before the remote installation is attempted.  To add the client to the client list, simply add it to a new or existing Standard policy.  When adding the client, it should be defined using the MACINTOSH, MacOSX10.4 selection from the "Client Hardware and Operating System" dropdown menu (Figure 1):

To install the client to a remote system, refer to the NetBackup 6.5 Installation Guide for UNIX and Linux (TechNote 290199, linked below) and the section entitled "Installing UNIX clients remotely" beginning on page 90.  Note: All notes in this section specifically applying to Mac OS X 10.3.x and 10.4.x also apply to 10.5.x as well.
