LiveUpdate fails with an error "Backup Exec failed to register with LiveUpdate. Ensure that the latest version of LiveUpdate is installed, and then try again"

If the installation of LiveUpdate is corrupt, if it's not visible in the Add or Remove Programs and when LiveUpdate is launched it gives the following popup as shown in Figure 1.

When Clicked on Yes it throws the error as shown in Figure 2.

Solution



1. Manually uninstall LiveUpdate as per:
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/docid/1999092114074613

2. Install LiveUpdate using the Backup Exec Installation Media
       a. Browse the Installation Media for Backup Exec for Windows Servers
       b. Go to WINNT\Install\LiveUpdate\EN
       c. Execute Lusetup.exe
 
3. Register Backup Exec for windows with LiveUpdate
      a. Open the command prompt on the server (for windows 2008 use the elevated mode)
      b. Change the Directory to X:\Program files\symantec\backup exec
          (replace X with the Drive letter where backup exec is installed)
      c. Run the command beupdateops.exe -addbe -optout.
