How to configure Backup Exec for Windows Servers (version 11d or later) to backup Oracle for Windows Servers

Solution

1. Set "Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers" services to log on as Local System on both the Backup Exec Media Server and Oracle for Windows Server.

2. Set Network > Logon Accounts to have an account that is either a Domain Administrator or Local Administrator on the Oracle server (Note: this account cannot be "System Logon Account" and has to be named so that the "Account Name" and "User Name" fields match EXACTLY).

*** NOTE: If the Administrator account and an account within Oracle have the same name (e.g. Administrator account is DOMAIN\backup and Oracle has a backup account as well), the references to the Administrator account must NOT include the domain name so that DOMAIN\backup becomes backup. ***

3. Set Network > Logon Accounts to have an entry for SYS (or an account with equivalent Oracle access) using SYS as the "Account Name" and "User Name".

4. Set Tools > Options > Oracle > Modify List to reference the Oracle server 3 times, once via IP Address, once via NETBIOS name, and once via Fully Qualified Domain Name, all 3 entries should use the account specified in Step 2.

Note:-xx.xx.xx.xx is an IP address of Oracle server.

5. On the Oracle for Windows server, click Start > All Programs > Symantec > Backup Exec for Windows Servers > Backup Exec Remote Agent Utility, set the Oracle tab to reference all instances with the user name SYS (or an account with equivalent Oracle access) which matches the account used in Step 3.

6. On the Oracle for Windows server, click Start > All Programs > Symantec > Backup Exec for Windows Servers > Backup Exec Remote Agent Utility, set the Database Access tab to reference the account name from Step 2 and the field "Use the full computer name or IP address for Oracle and DB2 operations " to the address of the Oracle server that matches the address listed on the Publishing tab under the section labled "Published names for this agent:".

7. On the Oracle for Windows server, click Start > All Programs > Symantec > Backup Exec for Windows Servers > Backup Exec Remote Agent Utility, set the Publishing tab to reference the Media Server by IP Address.

Note:-xx.xx.xx.xx is an IP address of Media server.

8. On the Backup Exec for Windows Servers Media Server, create a new Backup Job and expand the Server Name where Oracle is installed.  When prompted, select the account created in Step 3 to enumerate the contents of the Oracle Database.
