Problem
EvFsaBackupMode utility fails when trying to set a NetApp device to backup mode
Error
EvFsaBackupMode.exe -backup netapp vaultserver
Error opening the Service Control Manager on machine: vault1.example.local -
Error:
Error: Access is denied.
An unexpected error occurred in method: ???A@.
Solution
When the EvFsaBackupMode utility runs, it attempts to
connect to the Service Control Manager on the Enterprise Vault server by fully
qualified alias name. Due to Windows 2003 security, disable strict name checking
and disable loopback check need to be set for the utility to function properly.
The steps to disable strict name checking are documented in this Microsoft
knowledge base

Once these settings are put into place and the Enterprise Vault server is rebooted, the EvFsaBackupMode utility should work as designed.
