SQL log backups taking much longer after installing Backup Exec 11d HF 38 or upgrading to Backup Exec 12

Solution

SQL log backups may take longer after installing Backup Exec HF 38 or Upgrading to Backup Exec 12 if the MSDB database on the SQL instance has a large number of entries in the backupset table. This is usually an issue if there are a large number of databases.

Microsoft provides a cleanup task. This task is in the Maintenance Plan Tasks section of the Toolbox in SSIS Designer.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms186524.aspx

To verify that maintenance has been run:

      osql -E -S <server>\<instance>
      1) USE msdb
      2) GO
      1) SELECT count(*) FROM msdb..backupset WHERE database_name='<database>'
      2) GO

       ------------
            ###

      (1 row affected)

This number will indicate how many times the database has been backed up since the "backupset" table was last cleared.

      1) USE msdb
      2) GO
      1) EXEC sp_delete_backuphistory '<date ie. MM/DD/YY>'
      2) GO

This command will delete all backup history before the date give. This date must be before the last full backup

      1) USE msdb
      2) GO
      1) SELECT count(*) FROM msdb..backupset WHERE database_name='<database>'
      2) GO

       ------------
              ###

      (1 row affected)

Run the first command again to verify that the table was effected
