Problem

Granular Restore Technology (GRT) enabled Exchange 2003 backups fail with: "A memory allocation request failed. The computer may be running low on virtual memory"

Error

A memory allocation request failed. The computer may be running low on virtual memory

Cause

Exchange 2003 GRT backups to a remote Backup to Disk folder fail with: A memory allocation request failed. The computer may be running low on virtual memory.
  • Non GRT backups to the same device will be successful.
  • GRT backups to a local Backup to Disk folder will succeed.
This error will occur if the Backup Exec Remote Agent service on the media server is set to logon as a named account instead of the Local System account (See Figure1)

Note:

By default, Backup Exec sets the Remote Agent account to local system. Changing the logon for the Remote Agent to anything other than Local System is not recommended.

Solution

This issue has been been fixed by way of a hotfix in Backup Exec for Windows Servers version 12.0 and Backup Exec for Windows Servers version 12.5. For more details please refer to the Related Documents section.
