The Backup Exec Graphical User Interface (GUI) hangs when SQL Server 2005 resources hosted on a Windows Server 2008 are selected in the backup selections list

Error

When attempting to select SQL Server 2005 resources that are hosted on a Windows Server 2008, the Backup Exec GUI hangs.
Debug logs generated on Windows Server 2008 do not seem to show any problems connecting and, show databases being enumerated; please note however that it might not enumerate all of them.
The media server SGMon or debug logs from the same time frame show that a control connection is successfully established, but will then be followed by the following error sequence:

Environment

SQL Server 2005 running on Windows 2008

Cause

This issue occurs if the SP2 is not installed on SQL SERVER 2005 which will be supported on Windows Server 2008

Solution

Per Microsoft's documentation, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 must be upgraded to SP2 to be supported on Windows Server 2008:

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 or Microsoft Windows Vista

In addition to applying the service pack referenced above, the SQL instance configuration may need to be adjusted per the following steps in order for Backup Exec to be able to query the server and enumerate the selection list:

1. Open the SQL Server Configuration Manager.
2. Click the "+" box next to SQL Server Network Configuration.
3. Right-click the "Protocols for <database>" item.
4. Click Properties.
5. Change the Force Encryption box to No.
6. Click the OK button.
7. Restart all SQL Services.
