System State restore of a Windows 2008 server will fail with the error' An invalid parameter was specified.'

Error

0xe000fe49 - An invalid parameter was specified.

Solution

This behavior can be seen when attempting to restore a Windows 2008 Server to a fresh installation of Windows 2008 Server. After the restore of the System State fails, the server will reboot itself and be left in a completely unusable state. The server will boot into a black screen, then eventually reboot itself, and get stuck in a loop where it continually does the same reboot.

Workaround:

Perform an IDR recovery of the server.

Solution:

Apply the latest service pack for Backup Exec 12.0 or upgrade to a newer version of the software.
