DOCUMENTATION: Tuning Solaris 10 for NetBackup

Prior to Solaris 10, kernel tuning was performed by adding or changing entries in the /etc/system file and rebooting the server - see KB Doc TECH15131 (linked below) for advice on tuning Solaris 9 and earlier.

With the introduction of Solaris 10, Sun has deprecated the use of most /etc/system settings and introduced the Resource Controls Facility. This allows projects to be created for applications and the resources tuned dynamically on a per-project basis.

As part of this change, many of the tunables have been made obsolete and the majority of the remainder have been increased beyond the minimum needs of NetBackup. See the Solaris Tunable Parameters Reference Manual from Sun Microsystems for full details. The new defaults are more than sufficient for most customers.

Only four remain that are below the values recommended in the NetBackup 6.5 Backup Planning and Performance Tuning Guide (TECH62317 linked below) and may require adjustment. The table below maps the old and new parameters.

KB Doc TECH62633 (linked below) has all the details required for creating and modifying the tuning using Solaris 10 commands. Follow the instructions there to create a Solaris 10 tuning "project" for NetBackup.
