Backups of the local media server hang in a running state or the Backup Exec Services stop during a backup, restore, when any other operation is being performed or even when no job is running

Solution

An error similar to the following may also show in the Application Event Viewer Log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Backup Exec
Event Category: None
Event ID: 34114
Date: 12/17/2008
Time: 3:00:17 AM
User: N/A
Computer: Server
Description:
Backup Exec Alert: Job Cancellation
(Server: "Server") (Job: "Daily Full") The job was canceled because the response to a media request alert was Cancel, or because the alert was configured to automatically respond with Cancel, or because the Backup Exec Job Engine service was stopped.

Cause:

Windows Automatic Updates is attempting to install patches at the same time an operation is being performed with Backup Exec.  In addition to issues with local backups, connection or other anomalous errors may occur during backup or restore operations of remote machines.

Solution:

Manually install the Windows Updates or schedule the Windows Updates (Figure 1) to run at a time when no operations are being performed with Backup Exec (i.e.: backup, restore, inventory, database maintenance, etc...) on the media server, machine being imaged, or any remote machines.

Figure 1

Note:  The Backup Exec Services should ideally also be stopped prior to any patches being installed for the SQL Instance Backup Exec for Windows Servers uses.
