Problem
Is it possible to trigger or schedule a back job to target a specific storage location depending upon the physical location an end-user login too?
Environment
Backup administrators administrating multiple storage sites and responsible in having off-system backups of client systems are unable to schedule Backup Exec System Recovery backup jobs for mobile client systems (MCS) users (i.e. Laptops, Notebooks, Tablet PC's) if the MCS has the ability of connecting to any of the storage sites LAN and are uncertain of both when the MCS will be connected and to which specific storage site.
Cause
- At this time Backup Exec System Recovery agent installed on a MCS is unable to detect the network location it is connected too so it does not have the ability to determine which storage location to use to store its recovery point images. Please review the following suggested workarounds and related documents below for assistance on this matter.
Solution
- Common network storage location accessible from all sites using a non-scheduled event-triggered backup job.
- 1. Setup a common network storage location accessible from all sites seen as UNC path by these MCS in Backup Exec System Recovery's default backup destination section. For more information on the Configuring Backup Exec System Recovery default options please refer to the following technote document: http://support.veritas.com/docs/313639
2. Setup a recovery point set or independent backup job using this common UNC path from step one, having no backup schedule but and enabled event-trigger, 'Any user logs on to windows.' Follow the steps outline in technote : http://support.veritas.com/docs/313620 to setup the backup job. On step 19 perform the following additional steps:
- 1 Click General under Event Triggers.
4 Select the event, Any user logs on to windows and then click OK.
NOTE: Due to the often high utilization of CPU, disk I/O, and network bandwidth during a backup operation consider adjusting the default progress and performance slider and enable network throttling. For more information on the Configuring Backup Exec System Recovery default option please refer to the appropriate technote in the related document section below.
- Multiple non-scheduled backup jobs each to a specific storage site launched by user via system task tray icon.
- 1. Setup a recovery point set or independent backup job using a UNC path specific for a particular storage site following the steps listed in the technote, 'Defining a drive based backup,' in the related document section below; omit a backup schedule and specify an appropriate name representing the storage site in step 11 of the technote that is understandable by the mobile client system user.
2. Use a reminding system to have the MCS user perform a backup when connected to one of pre-defined sites.
- To run an existing backup immediately from the system tray
1 On the Windows desktop, right-click the Backup Exec System Recovery system tray icon.
2 Click Run Backup Now.
3 Select the backup job to start by clicking on appropriate name representing the site the mobile client system is connected too.
- 1. MCS users with large capacity drives with little storage/used space needs can be setup to have a recovery point set or independent backup job to the same source drive (i.e. backing up C drive to a folder on C) following the steps listed in the technote, 'Defining a drive based backup,' in the related document section below; include a backup schedule and specify an FTP Offsite copy location in step 9. For more information about Offsite Copy, How it works, and configuring default FTP settings for use with the Offsite Copy option please refer to the following technote document: http://support.veritas.com/docs/313609
NOTE: Due possibility of sensitive data contained on a MCS, it is recommend to enable password protection and encryption within the recovery point set or independent backup jobs before using a publicly reachable FTP Offsite location. For more information about Encryption, password protection and other Advance option settings for creating recovery points please refer to the following technote document: http://support.veritas.com/docs/313732
