Backup Exec System Recovery (BESR)/Symantec System Recovery (SSR) does not properly install, backup, or truncate logs or Granular Restore Option (GRO) does not properly retrieve messages on a Windows 2003 system running Exchange 2007 CCR cluster.

Solution

This technote is to address install, backup, transaction log truncating, and Granular Restore Option (GRO) retrieve issues with Backup Exec System Recovery (BESR) and Symantec System Recovery (SSR) on a Windows 2003 system running Exchange 2007 Cluster Continuous Replication (CCR) cluster in a majority node set configuration.

BESR version 8.0x and above uses the Symantec VSS provider to properly image VSS enabled applications and services. For Exchange, BESR version 8.0x and above requires an instance of the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MSDTC) due to BESR provider's COM+ dependencies. Exchange 2007 removes the requirement for the clustered MSDTC resource; MSDTC cluster resource requires the use of shared storage in the cluster. Microsoft does not recommend adding a shared storage to a CCR environment.  Because of this, Backup Exec System Recovery may not properly install, backup, and/or truncate Exchange logs in an Exchange CCR configuration and/or retrieve mailboxes /messages of information stores from such Exchange configuration through the use of Granular Restore Option (GRO).
