Backup Exec System Recovery 8.5: Multi-volume backup job may not capture all incremental changes in all volumes.

Solution

When a backup job is configured for base and incremental Recovery Points and multiple volumes are selected for backup within the same job, the incremental changes to one or more of the volumes may not be captured accurately.  The resultant incremental Recovery Points will not reflect the true state of their respective volumes at the time they were created, and they cannot be consolidated.

How to determine if affected
This issue can only occur if all of the following criteria are met:
  • Backup Exec System Recovery Desktop Edition, Server Edition, or Small Business Server Edition version 8.5 is installed
  • Multiple volumes are being backed up within the same backup job
  • The job is configured for both base and incremental Recovery Points

Note: Scheduled base Recovery Points and incremental backup jobs that contain only a single volume are not affected.

How to determine the installed version of Backup Exec System Recovery
To verify the version of Backup Exec System Recovery that is installed:
1. Open the interface and go the Help menu.
2. Choose About Backup Exec System Recovery

Permanent Resolution
This issue will be addressed in BESR 8.5.1 and will be available through FileConnect at the time of release.
After upgrading to 8.5.1:
1. Immediately create new base Recovery Points for any existing multi-volume incremental backup jobs.
2. Delete all existing Recovery Point sets created under those jobs by BESR 8.5.

Workaround for users of Backup Exec System Recovery 8.5
1.  Delete existing incremental backup jobs containing multiple volumes.
2.  Create new backups jobs for each volume individually: one job per volume.
3.  Run the new jobs to create new base images.
4.  Delete the Recovery Point sets created under the previous multi-volume backup job.
