Basic disk functions within VERITAS Volume Manager (tm) for Windows NT
Solution
Basic disks are
disks which use the disk partitioning mechanism from MS-DOS that has been
carried forward to all Microsoft operating systems. A basic disk can have
up to four primary partitions or three primary partitions plus an extended
partition. A basic disk can also have "legacy" partitions if the disk was
previously configured with Windows NT Disk Administrator. These legacy
partitions include volume sets, mirror sets, stripe sets, and stripe sets with
parity.
Volume
Manager only allows certain functions with basic disks, such as:
- Create and delete primary and extended partitions.
- Create and delete logical drives within an extended partition.
- Format a primary partitions and mark as active.
- View simple or spanned volumes.
- View striped volumes.
- View mirrored volumes.
- View RAID-5 volumes.
- Check disk properties such as status, capacity, unallocated space, as well as verifying which volumes exist on a disk.
- Make drive-letter assignments for basic volumes, CD-ROM, DVD, and removable drives.
The following advanced tasks for basic disks must be
performed through Windows NT's Disk Administrator:
- Create, delete, or repair spanned volumes (volume sets), striped volumes (striped sets), mirrored volumes (mirror sets), and RAID-5 volumes (stripe sets with parity).
