APPLICATION LOG -

Support for Microsoft Windows Address Windowing Extensions (AWE)

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 uses the Microsoft Windows Address Windowing Extensions (AWE) API to support very large amounts of physical memory.  Support for AWE is available only in the SQL Server 2005 Enterprise, Standard, and Developer editions and only applies to 32-bit operating systems. SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services (SSAS) cannot take advantage of AWE mapped memory. If the available physical memory is less than the user mode virtual address space, AWE cannot be enabled.

When running multiple instances of SQL Server on a computer, each instance dynamically acquires and frees memory to adjust for changes in the workload of the instance. Each instance that uses this memory; however, must statically allocate the memory it needs. SQL Server can only use this AWE allocated memory for the data cache and not for executables, drivers, DLLs, and so forth.

Large memory support is available in Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003
Since Backup Exec for Windows Servers 11d and above uses the SQL Express 2005 (MSDE) version AWE is not supported on the same. This usually happens when a full version of SQL server Enterprise or Developer edition with AWE enabled is installed along with the Backup Exec instance

Solution

Disabling AWE using OSQL

Step 1:

Open a command prompt and type osql -E -S <server name>\BKUPEXEC
If successfully connected to the server, the following prompt appears:
1>
This indicates a connection to the Backup Exec instance using OSQL.
To prepare the Backup Exec SQL instance so it AWE can be disabled type the following commands:
use master <press enter>
go <press enter>
sp_configure 'awe enabled', 0 <press enter>
RECONFIGURE <press enter>
GO <press enter>
Type quit to exit OSQL
The screen should look like the following:

Step 2:
Reinstall the update manually or through LiveUpdate.
