Issue



An Incremental backup of Exchange databases with the Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) option enabled causes the remote agent to crash intermittently on the Backup Exec server.


Error



An error occurred while connecting to the Backup Exec Remote Agent on the media server. Ensure that the job options are correct, and then submit the job again. The backup set was not created.

Final error: 0xe000fe30 - A communications failure has occurred.


Solution



The Remote Agent for Windows Servers (RAWS) service on the media server crashes intermittently while running incremental backup jobs for the Exchange databases with the GRT option enabled and the backup job reports an error as shown above.

The first few occurrences of the incremental backups complete successfully, but as the amount of logs to be handled during the GRT process on the media increases the RAWS crashes on the media server.

The crash dump analysis shows the crash to be occurring in the "MEMCPY" function.


Workaround:

Any of the following workarounds can be implemented to fix the above problem.

1. Run the Full backups using the GRT option but UNCHECK the GRT option for the Incremental Backups.

To do this, within the Exchange Backup Policy modify the Incremental Backup template so that the GRT option is UNCHECKED, however for the Full Backup template let the GRT option remain CHECKED


OR


2. Run Full-Incremental backups for the Exchange databases with the GRT option unchecked.

To do this, modify the Full Backup and the Incremental Backup templates within the Exchange Backup Policy so that the GRT option is UNCHECKED.
