Problem
Upgrade to Backup Exec for Windows Servers 12 or 12.5 May fail with the ERROR: Failed to install SQL Express BKUPEXEC instance with error 1388
Error
Failed to install SQL Express BKUPEXEC instance with error 1388
=============================================================================
Machine : SERVER
Product : SQL Server Database Services
Error : SQL Server Setup was unable add user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM to local group DOMAIN\SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$SERVERNAME$BKUPEXEC.
Error : 29512
=============================================================================
Cause
1) When the Prior Version was installed, Media Server was a Domain Controller and now it has been demoted to a Member server
2) When the Media server is a Domain Controller, the installation of SQL adds the user 'NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM' to a Domain Group (DOMAIN\SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$SERVERNAME$BKUPEXEC)
3) If the server is Demoted to a Member Server and an Upgrade is attempted, the SQL installation tries to add the User 'NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM' to a local group '(DOMAIN\SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$SERVERNAME$BKUPEXEC), which is not present.
4) This is how the Local Group appears in SQL "SERVERNAME\SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$SERVERNAME$BKUPEXEC".
Solution
- Stop the Backup Exec Services along with the SQL Server (BKUPEXEC)
- Copy over the data and the catalogs folder to a Different Location.
- Uninstall the Previous Version and then Perform a Fresh Installation of the New Version
- Perform data Migration. (Refer to the related Technotes)
