Backup Exec 12.5 NDMP Agent New Features and Limitations

Solution

New Features

Allows for the following functions:

  • Typing of names for files and directories to exclude from NDMP backup jobs.
  • Share tape devices between a Backup Exec Media Server and a NAS device. Tape devices can be shared between single or multiple media servers and NAS devices. In addition, NDMP data and non-NDMP data can be included in the same backup job.
  • The backup method and backup type for EMC backup jobs can be selected. Also allows enable file history, enable tape silvering, and back up data with integrated checkpoints.
  • Back up a NAS device to the following locations:
       -   A backup-to-disk device on a Backup Exec Media Server.
       -   A tape device that is attached to a Backup Exec Media Server.
·
  • Allows redirect of NDMP data from one NDMP server to another NDMP server.
  • VBB (EMC only) and dump backups are supported.  Must have DAR/DDAR (Direct Access Restore / Directory DAR) enabled at time of restore in order to restore individual directories.

Limitations

  • Only complete file systems (volumes) can be backed up; neither individual directories nor files can be selected for backup.

  • Restore operations will always overwrite data on DART (EMC Celerra) file systems.

  • A restore of an empty backup set, e.g. an incremental backup with no changes to the file system, will fail.

  • Canceled or Failed NDMP backups will not be restorable and will not be correctly marked as corrupt in the Backup Exec Catalogs.

  • The "Resource Order" and "Resource Credentials" section of a Backup Exec job will display un-mounted file system information, which results in backup jobs ending with resource errors. A new job is required to be created and submitted without the un-mounted file systems.

  • Cannot back up NDMP data to a simulated tape library or to a tape device that is attached to a Backup Exec Remote Media Agent for Linux Servers.

  • Cannot exclude files and directories from restore jobs on NDMP servers Excluded directories and files are restored.

The following limitations apply to redirected restores for NDMP:

  • Cannot redirect NDMP data to a computer that runs the Windows or Linux operating systems.

  • Redirected Restore is possible but only to another NDMP server of the same make and model (or the same server and different directory) but not to a Windows Machine.

  • Cannot redirect non-NDMP data, such as NTFS or SQL data, to an NDMP server.
