SharePoint Agent: Access is denied when attempting to make remote SharePoint backup selections in Backup Exec for Windows Servers

  • The selections for which access is denied are hosted on the SQL Server.
  • A telnet test on port 10000 from the "backup server" or "web server" to the "SQL Server" will not connect.

Error

Debug Log of Beremote on the "SQL Server" shows:

[6436] 10/13/08 12:00:49 ndmpConnectEx: All attempts to connect to 'Server' failed
[6436] 10/13/08 12:00:49 ndmpConnectEx: failed to connect to 'Server'
[6436] 10/13/08 12:00:49 Error connecting to NDMP SPSv2 on Server:10000.
[6436] 10/13/08 12:00:49 SPS unable to EstablishProxy with Server, as alpha\symantec, on call to GetTopology

Cause

A manual entry in the 'services' file in <systemroot>\System32\Drivers\etc was made to change the port that the Backup Exec Remote Agent (RAWS) uses for the connection from other servers. Port 10000 is the default port for the Remote Agent connection.  For example, the following may show in the services file:
ndmp 9000/tcp #Network Data Management Protocol

Solution

Delete the entire line listed above that is in the services file, save the file, and restart the Backup Exec Remote Agent Service to revert the default for RAWS back to Port 10000.  Restart the Backup Exec Services on the media server also.
