Installing License for Agent Microsoft SQL Server fails with "Failed to install SQL Express BKUPEXEC instance Error 1612"


Error



The Backup Exec installation log "bkupinst.htm" displays either of the following error messages. (The log file "bkupinst.htm" is located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Backup Exec\Logs):
 
ERROR: Failed to install SQL Express BKUPEXEC instance with error 1612.
Please review C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Summary.txt for more details.
Failed to install third party products.
Validating install complete
~CDlgBulkPushList(): Cleaning connections...
~CDlgBulkPushList(): Cleaning Done!
Success unloading BEINSTDLGS.DLL.
CLEANUP: Install has removed the following files from: C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1.CA3\LOCALS~1\Temp\1\{BE61998B-E5BD-4E41-B2D7-96551E6FECE0}
Removed files:
ERROR: Installation failed with error 1603.
 


Solution



Uninstall the following packages from Add/Remove Program (or Program/Features for Windows 2008/7)
  • MS XML 6.0 prior the installation of Backup Exec. 
  • Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer
  • Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files
  • Microsoft SQL Server Native Client

Attempt to install Backup Exec again.
