How to increase the performance of utility jobs on an IBM or NetApp Filer when using the Backup Exec for Windows Servers NDMP Option.

Solution

The performance of various Backup Exec utility jobs (such as Inventory or Catalog requests) against Media Libraries and Tape Drives connected to a filer running ONTAP (IBM or NetApp) can be improved by implementing the following recommendations:

1) Update the version of ONTAP to the latest version (at the time of writing this document this was version 7.3.2)

2) Update to the latest Shelf Firmware and Drive Firmware per Netapp Instruction.  Please contact Netapp support for assistance.

3) On the NetApp Filer, change the ndmpd.tcpnodelay.enable option from 'Off' to 'On' - to do this access the terminal console of the NetApp Filer and enter the following command:

    options ndmpd.tcpnodelay.enable = on

    or

    ndmpd.tcpnodelay.enable true

Note: This variable will not be available if an early version of ONTAP is installed on the filer. Also changing this option will not usually have an affect on the performance of backup jobs but it is considered good practice to leave this option enabled if using the Backup Exec for Windows Servers NDMP Option.
