Issue

Exchange Incremental backups using the Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) feature are slow and take an unexpectedly long time to complete.

Cause

The Exchange Incremental backups using the GRT feature take a longer time to complete compared to NON-GRT Exchange Incremental backups.

The slowness observed with the GRT incremental backup is currently as per design of the GRT feature. While running the incremental backup, Backup Exec will have to replay all the logs  that have been backed up since the FULL backup into the databases so that a point in time view of the databases along with its mailboxes is visible under the Restore Selections pane. The more log files backed up since last Full the longer time will each Incremental backup take to complete.

Currently no configurationally settings can be changed to improve the performance of the incremental backups when it is in the "updating catalogs" status.

Solution

Implement any of the following workarounds to fix the above problem:

  • Run the Full backups more frequently to have less incremental backups between the Full backup jobs so that the GRT process has less logs to manage.
  • If it is not possible to run the Full backup with a higher frequency, run the Full backups using the GRT option but UNCHECK the GRT option for the Incremental Backups.

To do this, within the Exchange Backup Policy modify the Incremental Backup template so that the GRT option is UNCHECKED, however for the Full Backup template let the GRT option remain CHECKED.

  • Make sure Backup Exec is fully patched and the Backup Exec Remote Agent on the Exchange server (if it is remote) is updated afterwards.

Some improvements were introduced in Backup Exec for Windows Servers 12.5 Service Pack 2 (SP2) and HF 337202 but incremental GRT enabled backups may still take a long time to complete the updating catalogs phase. Please refer to the Related Documents section for more information on SP2 and Hotfix 337202.

Note: Backup Exec 2010 has significant improvements for Exchange GRT Full and Incremental backups (for Exchange 2003, Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010 VSS enabled backups only).
