Problem
Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers (RAWS) terminates while backing up any resource on a remote server: with error "The connection to target system has been lost." if DCOM Permissions are not configured properly.
Error
The connection to target system has been lost. Backup set canceled.
Solution
This error occurs because the accounts specified for the Backup Exec services and the System account do not have rights within DCOM. Please perform the following steps to resolve this issue.
For Windows 2000 Servers:
1. At Start | Run, type DCOMCNFG, and press <Enter>
2. Click on the Default Security tab
3. Click on the Edit Default button in the Default Access Permissions section
4. Add in the account that is specified for the Backup Exec services, along with the System account, and give them Allow Access rights
5. Click OK, and then OK again to close the application
6. Start the Backup Exec services with the specified user account
For Windows 2003 Servers and Windows XP computers:
1. At Start | Run, type DCOMCNFG, and press <Enter>
2. Expand Component Services and then Computers
3. Right-click on My Computer, and select Properties
4. Click on the COM Security tab (for Windows XP) or the Default COM Security tab (for Windows 2003)
5. Click Edit Default in the Access Permissions section
6. Add in the account that is specified for the Backup Exec services, along with the System account, and give them Allow Access rights
7. Click OK, and then OK to close the application
8. Start the Backup Exec services with the user account.
