Backup Exec System Recovery (BESR) Management Control fails to install and generates an Error 1603 in the LOADER.LOG


Error



Installing publisher failed with error code: 1603


Solution



When attempting to install BESR and the Management Control the setup may fail with the following error:
 
Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery Manager, The Symantec software installation failed. You can review the log files at: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery Manager\EasyInstaller\.
 
The actual cause of the failure is not generated in the LOADER.LOG until the Easy Installer is run in Verbose Mode. This will generate more information and the error codes needed to resolve the issue.
 
To enable Verbose Logging:
 
1) Open a command prompt window by going to Start / Run / CMD
 
2) Navigate to the directory where the Easy Installer was downloaded
 
3) Run the Easy Installer with the -verbose switch
 
4) Once the install is finished, review the <drive>:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\BackupExecSystemRecoveryManager\EasyInstaller\LOADER.LOG for errors.

Perform the following steps to resolve the error condition:
 
Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows Registry Editor can have disastrous results on a server Operating System. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows Registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the Registry Editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.
 

 
For x86 (32bit) based operating systems
 
1) Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SYMANTEC\Backup Exec System Recovery Manager
 
2) Right click and delete key
 
3) Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
 
Remove the following if present:
 
\{EFB12305-EF60-407F-BEF0-86A2288C1757} (LiveState Recovery 6.x)
 
\{023F5527-1A4F-4CB7-9D0C-348438D5DF84} (BESR 7.x)
 
\{2C0A535D-4393-4D31-89A0-50D7427FC618} (BESR 8.0)
 
\{1ADF2040-ACC0-4609-B424-1E52EBBA5DF5} (BESR 8.5)
 
4) Close Registry Editor
 
5) Run the Easy Installer setup in verbose mode to confirm the successful install
 

 
For x64 (64bit) based operating systems
 
1) Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432node\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery Manager
 
2) Right click and delete key
 
3) Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
 
Remove the following if present:
 
\{EFB12305-EF60-407F-BEF0-86A2288C1757} (LiveState Recovery 6.x)
 
\{023F5527-1A4F-4CB7-9D0C-348438D5DF84} (BESR 7.x)
 
\{2C0A535D-4393-4D31-89A0-50D7427FC618} (BESR 8.0)

4) Close Registry Editor
 
5) Run the Easy Installer setup in verbose mode to confirm the successful install
