Problem
Live Update fails when run from within Backup Exec User Interface on a Windows 2008 Server with the error "LU1812: A program that was part of this update failed when it ran"
Error
Application Log - Product: Symantec Backup Exec for Windows Servers - Update '{GUID}' could not be installed. Error code 1625. Windows Installer can create logs to help troubleshoot issues with installing software packages.
BKUPINST.LOG - V-225-136: The patch failed to install
Solution
Install log may list following two lines:
Entering patch setup.exe
Error setting install bin path value.
On Windows 2008 Server, Live Update when launched from under Tools--Live Update may fail with the error mentioned above even if the Backup Exec Service Account is member of Domain Administrators and local Administrator group. This issue can be caused by "User Account Control".
Manual install of the Hotfixes or Service Pack would work fine
In Windows 2008 and Windows Vista a new security feature called "User Account Control" has been added. It improves the security of Microsoft Windows by limiting application software to standard user privileges until an administrator authorizes an increase in privilege level.
Solution / Workaround:
(A)
1. Disable "User Access Control" on the Windows 2008 Media Server
2. Reboot the Media Server.

information about User Access Control

(B)
Open the
console by a Right-click on the Backup Exec icon and select "Run as
Administrator" and then run Live Update from the console.
(C)
Manually stop
all Backup Exec services except the Backup Exec SQL service before starting the
installation.
