Slow performance when backing up to the Dell RD1000 Internal SATA Drive.

Backing up data to a Dell RD1000 Internal SATA Drive configured as a Removable B2D (Backup to Disk) results in slower performance.

Cause

Some system SATA ports by default  do not operate in DMA mode for the RD1000 Internal SATA Drive. This results in slower performance.

DMA:Direct Memory Access. A technique for transferring data from main memory to a device without passing it through the CPU. Computers that have DMA channels can transfer data to and from devices much more quickly than computers without a DMA channel. This is useful for making quick backups and for real-time applications.

Solution

Reinstall the software included on the RD1000 User's Guide and Utilities CD, which includes essential Windows software for use with the RD1000 unit. Reinstalling the unit software for windows will set the SATA ports to the correct mode.

Please make sure to review the hardware manufacturer's documentation and if there are still issues after doing so and performing the steps in the link below, open a support case with the hardware manufacturer to confirm that the tape hardware is functioning properly.
