"Installation Failed" message occurs when attempting to install the Backup Exec Windows Server (BEWS) 12.5 program, hotfix, or service pack.


Error



Installation Failed

The above error message is observed during an installation of Backup Exec for Windows Servers. A windows popup occurs at the 'Copying files' phase of the install giving the error 'Installation Failed,' with an OK button as seen below (Figure 1). Once clicking 'OK' the installation will complete as expected. Within the Backup Exec console, going to Help > About > Installed Updates as well as Add/Remove Programs will show the hotfix or service pack as installed.

The error occurs when installing the tpfilter.sys filter driver when the 'RunOnce' registry value is missing. The missing registry key causes the Microsoft installer process to return a failed a message, even though the driver has installed successfully.

Solution.
 
WARNING: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly.  Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry.  Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application.  It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.
 

 
Create the following registry key, and then run the installation:
 

 
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
