If a backup selection contains a mount point having long pathname, "Backup Exec Job Engine" might terminate unexpectedly

Error



Event ID 57353: A buffer overflow was detected and the process will be terminated

Solution



This issue occurs only when the following conditions are met:
  • The backup selection contains a mount point which is being mounted by a volume.
  • The mount point has long (more than 230 characters) pathname.
  • The backup job is utilizing AOFO option.

After the above backup job was launched, "Backup Exec Job Engine" (bengine.exe) terminates unexpectedly, then the following message would be shown in the application event log:

Event ID 57353, Source Backup Exec
A buffer overflow was detected and the process will be terminated. The command line for the affected process is '"C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\bengine.exe"'.

Resolution:

This issue has been resolved by way of a hotfix in Backup Exec for Windows Servers version 11D build 7170, Backup Exec for Windows Servers version 12.0 and in Backup Exec for Windows Servers version 12.5. For more details please refer to the Related Documents section.
