Backup Exec System Recovery Server Edition (BESR) cannot perform a COPY backup of SQL 2000 databases using the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).

Solution

BESR uses VSS to perform backup of VSS enabled databases like Exchange and SQL installed on Windows 2003 server and above. This allows to maintain the consistency of the backup set. To allow these VSS based backups to be performed by BESR and also not interfere with backup strategy of any other backup application, the option "Perform full VSS backup" was added in BESR 8.0.

1. When this option is unchecked (default selection),BESR will perform a COPY backup of SQL database using VSS.  The COPY backup will back up the database and will not truncate the logs.
2. With this option checked, BESR will perform a FULL Backup of SQL databases using VSS. The FULL backup will back up the database and also truncate the logs.

However for SQL 2000 databases the backup method used is always FULL backup, irrespective of whether the option "Perform full VSS backup" is checked or unchecked and as a result the logs get truncated. This is due to the fact that VSS uses the MSDEWRITER to backup SQL 2000 databases whereas to backup SQL 2005 databases the SQLSERVERWRITER is used.
The MSDEWRITER has a limitation that it cannot perform a COPY backup and hence the "Perform full VSS backup" does not apply for SQL 2000 databases.
When a SQL 2000 application on a Windows 2003 server is being protected using both BESR and Backup Exec for Windows Servers (BEWS), the above limitation of the MSDEWRITER could cause problems if a Full-Differential backup strategy or a Full-Logs backup strategy has been implemented in BEWS. Please refer to the Related Documents section for more information on how BEWS backup jobs get affected by this issue.
