How to remove and reset backup job and history information in Backup Exec System Recovery or Symantec System Recovery.

Solution

These steps will remove the backup job(s) and job history in Backup Exec System Recovery (BESR) or Symantec System Recovery (SSR):

(NOTE: These steps will NOT remove your existing recovery points, but will remove all reference to them in BESR\SSR. These ‘orphaned’ recovery points are valid and can be used in a disaster recovery.  These orphaned recovery points can be manually deleted without affecting the SSR\BESR history.)

1.  Click on Windows Start | Run | type "services.msc", click ok.
2.  Locate and stop the Backup Exec System Recovery or Symantec System Recovery service.
3. Create a new folder called OLD, and move (do not copy) all files with the file extensions .PQH, .PQJ, and .sv2i located by default into this folder from the following folders:

Backup Exec System Recovery 8.5 and earlier
Windows version 2000, 2003, and XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery or Symantec System Recovery\
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery or Symantec System Recovery\History\
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery or Symantec System Recovery\Schedule\

Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 and later
Windows version 2000, 2003, and XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery or Symantec System Recovery\
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery or Symantec System Recovery\History\
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery or Symantec System Recovery\Schedule\

Windows version 7, 2008 and newer:
C:\ProgramData\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery or Symantec System Recovery\
C:\ProgramData\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery or Symantec System Recovery\History\
C:\ProgramData\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery or Symantec System Recovery\Schedule\

4.  Delete the RPAM folder located in the following location:

Windows version 2000, 2003, and XP
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec

Windows version 7 and newer:
C:\ProgramData\Symantec\

If using SSR 2011 or older:
5.  Delete the hidden file vsnap.idx at the root of each volume being backed up.
Note: To make VSNAP.IDX visible, click on Tools | Folder Options | View. Check Show Hidden files and folders and uncheck Hide protected operation system files.
6.  Delete the "RPAM_Store.dat" file from the Backup Destination along with "VProRecovery" hidden folder

If using SSR 2013 or newer:
7. Delete the hidden .vtrack folder and the VTrackDiskControl.ctl file from the root of each volume being backed up.
To make these hidden files visible, follow steps in step 5.

8.  Move all existing ‘orphaned’ recovery points to a new folder location. These files can manually be deleted at a later time. The backup destination for the new backup job should be empty.
9.  Restart the machine and setup the new backup job.
