Event 40966 - Permission synchronization error when deleting or moving a folder

After deleting or moving a folder with an associated archive subsequent synchronization runs can report an error to the event logs, Event 40966.


Event 40966
Exception: External component has thrown an exception.
Type: System.Runtime.InteropServices.SEHException
Command Line: "C:\Program Files\Enterprise Vault\EvFsaSyncTask.exe"

To validate if this is the issue a Dtrace is needed, please perform the following steps on the EV server that has generated Event ID 40966 while re-creating the issue. 

  • For more information about Symantec Enterprise Vault’s Dtrace Utility please see HOWTO57893.
  • Dtrace the process EVFsaSynchTask for no less than 5 minutes while re-creating the issue.
  • Open the log file created and search for either of the following the strings:


{FOLDER.EN_US} An error occured synchronizing permissions for folder: \\?\UNC\folder and the Archive object with id: Archive ID of the affected archive.




This issue can occur during a synchronization task attempt to bring the file system permissions to an archive. If the folder path for the archive no longer exists this error will be generated, while the Enterprise Vault server has been configured with the SynchroniseFSASharePermissions registry key set to 0


1. Using Dtrace during the synchronization will provide the details of which path is causing this issue - once identified the path can be re-added to the target file system.

2. Switch the SynchroniseFSASharePermissions registry key back to 1 - see TECH55846.

3. Contact Technical Support to remove the volume target association for the archive from the EnterpriseVaultDirectory database.


Symantec Corporation has acknowledged that the above-mentioned issue is present in the version(s) of the product(s) referenced in this article.

There are currently no plans to address this issue by way of a cumulative hotfix or service pack in the current or previous versions of the software at the present time. This issue may be resolved in a future major revision of the software at a later time, but is not scheduled for any release.
