The migration process from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 requires the use of the Site Replication Service (SRS). The Site Replication Service is a directory service, which bridges the gap between the Exchange 5.5 DS (Directory Services) and Active Directory. The SRS notifies the Exchange 5.5 servers about the entire Exchange infrastructure, which then enables directory replication between the two systems. It does this intrasite replication through RPC calls. This allows the Exchange server to share configuration information with other Exchange servers in a mixed-mode organization. A copy of the directory is maintained in the SRS.EDB database.
The Site Replication Service database is protected with Backup Exec by selecting the SRS Storage object for backup. After a migration to an Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 only environment, it is suggested that the Microsoft SRS be removed. Once the SRS has been removed, if the object is still selected as part of a Backup Exec (tm) backup job, the above error will be written to the job log file. To overcome the problem, deselect the Microsoft Site Replication Service and exclude the SRS.MDB file from the backup selections per the solution below.
1. Within Backup Exec, select the backup job, and go to Backup Job Properties.
Note : Only selecting the 'Microsoft Information Store' enables GRT backups and restores of Exchange data.
