SAP Agent Restore: Control File is corrupted in a restore job and database cannot be started if the backup job used software compression

Solution

If SAP data is backed up with software compression enabled, the following problems may occur when the SAP database is restored:

  • The control file is corrupted.
  • The database cannot be started.

These issues have been seen when the following conditions exist:

  • SAP is used with the Oracle database.
  • The Backup Exec Agent for SAP Applications is used for the backup job with software compression enabled.

Workaround:

To prevent these issues from occurring, ensure that software compression is not enabled in the template for DBA-initiated backup jobs. If software compression is enabled and the control file is corrupt, the control file must be restored manually. To manually restore the control file:

1. On the computer where the Backup Exec Agent for SAP Applications is installed, shut down the SAP database.
2. On the Backup Exec navigation bar, click the arrow next to Restore.
3. Click New Restore Job.
4. Click Selections.
5. Select the control file in the backup sets for SAP. The control file is usually found at the following path: \\Machine_Name\c$\oracle\cer\sapdata1\cntrl\ctrlcer.ctl
6. Restore the control file over the corrupt control file.
7. Copy the control file to the other configured locations of the control file. Oracle usually has three control files. The usual locations of the control files are as follows:

- \\<machine name>\c$\oracle\cer\sapdata2\cntrl\ctrlcer.ctl
- \\<machine name>\c$\orcle\cer\saparch\cntrl\ctrlcer.ctl

8. On the computer where the Backup Exec Agent for SAP Applications is installed, bring the database up.

Solution:

This issue has been resolved in Backup Exec for Windows Server version 12.5.
