How to troubleshoot errors when attempting to create a Backup to Disk folder (B2D) on a remote NAS server

Error

"The specified user does not exist".

Solution

Attempts to create a backup to disk folder can fail in different ways, including with the error shown below:

Troubleshooting :

1: Name Resolution

From a command prompt on the Backup Exec media server, ping the short-name eg PING NAS1

This confirms that name resolution is working as well as confirming a network route to the server

If the "ping request could not find host" then try the fully qualified domain name eg PING NAS1.FULL.DOMAIN.NAME.COM

If this still doesn't resolve to an IP address then it will be necessary to work with a network administrator to configure DNS or alternatively the Windows HOSTS file

2: Authentication

Identify what form of authentication is supported by the NAS: domain accounts vs local accounts on the device

Some NAS boxes only support NT and Windows 2000 domain which will be a problem if the actual domain is Windows 2003

Check that the Backup Exec service account has sufficient permission to access the NAS box.  This can be done when logged onto the media server using the Backup Exec service account and mapping a network drive to the folder on the NAS.  Ensure read and write access has been proven by creating text files.
If the NAS box only supports workgroups, try changing the workgroup name so that it is not the same name as the domain name
