Using Storage Provisioning Option (SPO) backup device with Granular Restore Technology (GRT) in Backup Exec 12.5

Solution

Backup Exec (BE) allows SPO Virtual disk(s) to be used for backups of all types. It is important to understand how GRT backups and restores will differ from backups and restores using standard hard drives.

*Note: The following is for Backup Exec 12.5 and the usage of SPO.  In Backup Exec 2010 the SPO usage is changed to respond.

Background:

  • Any GRT backup to a SPO device will create BKF files instead of IMG folders.
  • This behavior affects all of the Backup Exec GRT enabled agents: (For more information about GRT and the individual agents see Related Documents).
    • Active Directory Recovery Agent
    • Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server
    • Agent for Microsoft Virtual Server
    • Agent for Microsoft SharePoint
    • Agent for VMWare Virtual Infrastructure

At the time of GRT restore from a GRT backup set on an SPO device for any of the GRT enabled agents, there will be a requirement to provide a staging location for the GRT restore operation.  For an Exchange Database GRT backup, only the granular restore data for Mailboxes will be visible in the Restore Selections. Due to MAPI limitations the Public Folder GRT information will not be visible. An Exchange GRT backup for a Public Folder Store must be written to a traditional Backup to disk (B2D) device to display granular restore data. An Exchange GRT Incremental Policy must be written to a traditional B2D device also.
