DOCUMENTATION: How to optimize Exchange 2007 Cluster Continuous Replication (CCR) backups when the cluster is also configured as a SAN media server

Solution

Steps for cluster setup of Exchange 2007 CCR and a local NetBackup Media Server:
1. Follow the steps in Appendix D of the NBU HA Guide for setup of the NetBackup Media Server (see the related documents section below)

2. However, introduce a new "virtual name" (aka "virtual app") into the cluster for the storage unit.  Do not associate the storage unit with the Exchange virtual name.  Use a separate virtual name for the storage unit.
For example:
a. Assume that "virtual_storage_unit" is the new virtual name.
b. Create a new cluster group that contains the "virtual_storage_unit".
c. Add a separate disk resource for the disk storage unit in that cluster group.
d. Setup the media server via the instructions in Appendix D:
nbemmcmd -addhost -machinename virtual_storage_unit -machinetype app_cluster
e. In NBU, make sure the storage unit "hostname" is setup to be the "virtual_storage_unit" name. (Not the Exchange App Name)

3. In the cluster, make sure the "virtual_storage_unit" cluster group is running (online) on the passive Exchange node.  This will allow the passive Exchange backup to be performed by the local Media server.

Policy Settings
Ensure the following policy settings:
- Storage Unit: Use the "virtual_storage_unit" name to setup the storage unit location.
- Client List: In the client list, enter the Exchange virtual name
- Host Properties: Enable the Backup the passive copy and if not available backup the active copy setting.

Functional overview of this configuration:
Initially, Exchange will use the passive node for backup, which will access the "virtual_storage_unit" cluster group on the passive node.  This backup transfer will be local.  If the backup via the passive node fails, then the "virtual_storage_unit" cluster group will failover to the active Exchange node.  This backup transfer will still be local.

If Exchange active and passive roles are changed, use the cluster management tools to manually move the "virtual_storage_unit" cluster group to appropriate node to assure local backup.  Otherwise, backup transfer will occur over the LAN.  In the rare case that Exchange CCR determines the backup should be performed on the active node, yet the passive node is still operational (the virtual_storage_unit cluster group has not failed).  The backup transfer will also occur over the LAN.
