Backup Exec is unable to reuse/reclaim space from OLD IMG media that are located in a Removable Backup to Disk Folder (For example DELL RDX 1000 device) and these IMG media show up under the "Backup Exec and Windows NT Backup Media" media set.

Technical Solution

Issue

From Backup Exec v12.0 and later, backup jobs with the Granular Restore Technology (GRT) enabled can be targeted to a Removable Backup to Disk Device (RB2D). When GRT backups are using a RB2D device, such as the RDX line of removable cartridges, it is observed that GRT enabled backup jobs are not able to reclaim space from OLD IMG media as expected and continue to create new IMG folders on the cartridge.

Environment

A RB2D is configured to E:\  using the DELL RDX1000 device. There are 2 cartridges available (Cartridge 1 and Cartridge 2) that will be switched every alternate day.  GRT enabled backup jobs are targeted to this RB2D device and the media set (MEDIA SET 1) being used has the Overwrite Protection Period set to 2 days.

Day 1:

The GRT enabled backup job is run to the RB2D for the first time. IMG00001 is created on the Cartridge 1 that is currently attached to the Backup Exec server. Under the ALL MEDIA section under the MEDIA tab in the Backup Exec console, the IMG00001 media is shown under the MEDIA SET 1.

Day 2:

Cartridge 1 is detached from the Backup Exec server and the Cartridge 2 is attached. An inventory is now run on the RB2D. It is observed that under the ALL MEDIA section under the MEDIA tab in the Backup Exec console, the IMG00001 is no more listed.

The GRT enabled backup job is run to the RB2D. IMG00002 is created on the Cartridge 2 that is currently attached to the Backup Exec server. Under the ALL MEDIA section under the MEDIA tab in the Backup Exec console, the IMG00001 media is NOT shown at all and the IMG00002 is shown under the MEDIA SET 1.

Day 3:

Cartridge 2 is detached and Cartridge 1 from Day 1 is reattached. An inventory is now run on the RB2D. It is observed that under the ALL MEDIA section under the MEDIA tab in the Backup Exec console, the IMG00001 is now listed under the "Backup Exec and Windows NT Backup Media" media set while the IMG00002 does not show up at all.

Cause

The GRT enabled backup job is run to the RB2D. IMG00003 is created on the Cartridge 1 instead of deleting/reclaiming space from IMG00001. Because the IMG0001 now belongs to the "Backup Exec and Windows NT Backup Media" media set, it shows up as "Infinite Overwrite Protected" and hence Backup Exec is unable to reclaim space from the IMG00001. Please refer the Technote TECH63043 in the Related Documents section for more information.

Solution

1. Apply the Hotfix listed below for the Backup Exec version.
2. Any IMG folders already existing must be manually Retired and Deleted in Backup Exec and Deleted in the Disk location.
3. The Hotfix will resolve the issue for New IMG folders created from the next backup jobs.
4. When changing drives, the new drive must be inventoried. You can schedule an Inventory job to run just before the backup to ensure the inventory occurs.

For Backup Exec 2010:  This has been resolved in Backup Exec 2010 for Windows Servers revision 2896 Hotfix 344584. It can be downloaded from the following link: www.symantec.com/docs/TECH126191
For Backup Exec 12.5: This has been resolved in Backup Exec 12.5 for Windows Servers revision 2213 Hotfix 340792. It can be downloaded from the following link:www.symantec.com/docs/TECH126509

For Backup Exec 12.0: Please use the workaround provided below.

Note: After applying the BE 12.5 or BE 2010 hotfix, the behavior stated above will change and the IMG media will no more show under "Backup Exec and Windows NT Backup Media" media set on swapping cartridges. Instead they will continue to show in their parent media set but they will be marked offline when cartridges are swapped.

For example: If three cartridges are being used in a rotation, on highlighting the RB2D IMG/BKF media from all three cartridges will show up on the right hand side pane. But only those IMG/BKF media that exist on the currently inserted cartridge will show online, rest will show offline but in their parent media set.

Workaround:

Manually move the old IMG media to the SCRATCH media set whenever the cartridges are swapped.
