Further investigation in the Log.LiveUpdate file reveals the following errors:

The Update executed with a result code of 1812, => The install script for this update was unable to launch a file it needed. LiveUpdate aborted the update install.
This issue is caused by Microsoft User Account Control (UAC). Symantec recommends consultation with the IT staff responsible for security before attempting the solution below.
Disable Microsoft User Account Control (UAC).
Please note, this process will require a reboot.
1. Open the Control Panel.
2. Double Click on User Accounts.
3. Click Turn User Account Control on or off
3a. (If a User Account Control message is displayed, click Continue.)
4. Clear the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer check box, then click OK.
5. Click the Resart Now to apply the change right away, or click Restart Later and close the User Account tasks window.
