A critical issue has been discovered in PureDisk Remote Office Edition 6.5 and 6.5.x whereby if a backup job with multistreaming enabled aborts (for example, due to network issues), then on subsequent successful backup jobs, data is backed up but may appear to be incomplete in the GUI. This issue does not affect PDDO. Workarounds are available.

Solution

Introduction:
A critical issue has been discovered in PureDisk Remote Office Edition 6.5 and 6.5.x if multiple backup streams are enabled and one of the streams fail.  This issue does not affect PDDO (PureDisk Deduplication Option).  The data is backed up, but restore selections may appear to be incomplete.  Data is not known to be lost or missing in this case the issue lies in the metadata used to display the restore selections.

What is Affected:
This problem is known to occur with the following PureDisk versions:
- PureDisk Remote Office Edition 6.5 through 6.5.1.2

How to Determine if Affected:
This issue has been known to occur if ALL of the following conditions have been met:
  • The SPA (Storage Pool Authority) is running PureDisk 6.5 and greater
  • In the Parameters tab of the policy, "Number of backup streams" is > 1
  • The "Store contents on content router" phase of the backup fails for any of these streams. If a failure occurs during this step, this function will fail for all streams and cause this issue to occur.
These conditions may not consistently or immediately cause missing restore selections, but have been known to and are directly related to this issue.

Workarounds / Mitigations:
To prevent the issue from occurring, make sure the number of backup streams is equal to 1 in every policy, or select "Use agent default" for all new backups/policies.  It is not recommended to use multiple backup streams until a fix for this issue is available.

The following workarounds are available in cases where the issue has been exhibited and restore selections are missing:
  • Restoring from a parent folder or root level should correctly restore files and folders therein, even if they do not appear in the restore GUI due to this issue.
  • The "Find Files" feature is fully functional and will discover files correctly, even if they do not appear in the restore GUI due to this issue.
  • Recreate the same data selections for the client.  Backing up any "affected" files or folders again under a different data selection will tend to "repair" those entries so they can be viewed again.
Formal Resolution:
Symantec has acknowledged that the above mentioned issue (Etrack 1736677) is present in the current version(s) of the product(s) mentioned at the end of this article.  Symantec is committed to product quality and satisfied customers.  Symantec reserves the right to remove any fixes should they not pass quality assurance testing.

This issue is in the process of being addressed in a future release or patch.  An emergency fix is not currently available, please contact Symantec Technical Support for further instruction if the workarounds listed above are not acceptable.
