Error: 0xe000fe3c - "Before you can back up this resource, you must purchase and install a license key for the appropriate Backup Exec agent" occurs after upgrading Backup Exec for Windows Servers from a prior version

Error

Error: 0xe000fe3c - "Before you can back up this resource, you must purchase and install a license key for the appropriate Backup Exec agent"

UMI code: V-79-57344-65084

Cause

The issue may occur in the below scenarios:

  1. This issue occurs when the Updated License/Product Activation Keys for existing agent options other than the core product are not entered or license keys are missing after an upgrade to a higher version.
  2. This issue occurs when the license for any agent options other than the core product are not upgraded from the previous version. ( eg: Version 12.0 or 11d had agent for SQL server and may not require agent for SQL server anymore in version 12.5 and upgraded only the core product but not the agent for SQL server.)
  3. Core product and options still have evaluation time available
  4. When backing up Enterprise Vault using the Backup Exec Enterprise Vault agent, the backup job may fail to backup all portions of Enterprise Vault.

Solution

Scenario 1:
Obtain the correct License/Product Activation Keys for the upgraded version and run the Backup Exec Installation again to enter these keys. For more information on this, review the following document:

How to obtain the installation source download and license keys for Backup Exec for Windows Servers and components
 http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH51162

Scenario 2:
Delete the backup selections from the jobs which no longer require an agent.

1. Open the backup job properties

2. Click on the view selection details.

3. Delete the text entries of the agent option which is not upgraded with the core product.

4. Submit the job.

If the above two scenario's do not resolve the issue, follow the steps mentioned below:

Scenario 3:
If the core product and options still have evaluation time available:
Uninstall the RAWS (Remote Agent for Windows Servers) and the CORE license for Backup Exec
Run a new backup job keeping the same selection list or retry the same backup job which had failed earlier.
The backups should be successful.
Re-enter the CORE license followed by the RAWS license in Backup Exec
Run the same job again and the jobs should be successful.

For additional information on how to edit selection list, please refer to the Related Documents below.  Note : Try recreating same selection list as it does resolve this issue.

Scenario 4:
Backup Exec relies on the EVBackup.XML file located on the Enterprise Vault server in the <install_path>\Enterprise Vault\Reports directory. The EVBackup.XML file holds the location of the Vault Stores, Vault Store Partitions and Indexes.
The problem arises when the EVBackup.XML file references the CNAME and the HOST name of the Enterprise Vault server.

In the below example, the path of the Indexes are referenced using both the CNAME  and physical hostname of the Enterprise Vault server.

<IndexLocation IndexRootPath="\\<CNAME>\D$\EVStorage\Index_1\index1" IndexRootPathStatus="0" IndexRootPathEntryId="1029602598B815048AB80C92FC47BF8181810000EVServer" />

<IndexLocation IndexRootPath="\\<HOSTNAME>\D$\EVStorage\Index_1\index8" IndexRootPathStatus="0" IndexRootPathEntryId="12F7352416A96A642B9A5FB9CB33359001810000EVServer" />

Confirm that EVBackup.XML includes either the host name or cname of the Enterprise Vault server but not both.
