Issue

When backing a server with the ISA 2004 Firewall running in the environment, the backup fails with "A communications failure has occurred" and "The connection to target system has been lost"

Error

0xe000fe30 - A communications failure has occurred. - The connection to target system has been lost. Backup set canceled.

Cause

If  bi-directional rules not set on the ISA server for connections to be made from both the Media Server as well as the remote server.

Solution

  • Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server is an integrated network edge security gateway that helps protect IT environments from Internet-based threats while providing users fast and secure remote access to applications and data.
  • The outbound rule in ISA will need to be configured to allow traffic outbound. The outbound rule will allow "bi-directional" communication. Backup Exec requires connections to be made from both the Media Server as well as the remote server. Without the bi-directional rules, the servers will not be able to communicate with each other.
  • The outbound configuration on the ISA should be configured similarly to the picture shown below:

If assistance to configure the rule is needed on ISA Server, please contact Microsoft support for further assistance.

To confirm both the Remote Agent and Media Server can communicate with each other, attempt to telnet on port 10000 to and from each server using the following syntax:

               telnet <servername> 10000

If successfully connected, the following should be returned:

If the firewall is not allowing connections to be made, the following may show:
