Issue

While trying to enumerate the contents of the VirtualCenter/ESX host Server in Backup Exec 12.5 the following error is reported:

Error

"An error was encountered while attempting to browse the contents of VirtualCenter-Name. Cannot read the Virtual Machines and Templates view on VirtualCenter Server."

Error From VMWapper log:
RetrieveVmContents failed. Msg: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

[165c] 08/05/09 13:44:04 Failed RetrieveFolderContents. Msg: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

This error may be reported under the following 2 scenarios:

1) Error while enumerating the VirtualCenter\ESX host itself:

This may happen if the ESX host is running the ESXi  Free version:

The VMWare Consolidated Backup (VCB) feature is not available to ESXi free license installed. For VCB to work on ESXi the VI Foundation license is required.

Please see the following link for more information.

2) Error while enumerating a virtual machine on the VirtualCenter\ESX host (

On ESX or ESXi with the VI foundation license and higher.):

Solution

The issue could be with one or more virtual machines on the ESX host with a unique configuration. To determine the cause we need to examine the differences between the working and the non working virtual machines.
