Issue

This article explains how to configure the VSS System provider to perform snapshot backups with Backup Exec for Windows Servers explicitly when Backup Exec for Windows Servers and Backup Exec System Recovery coexist.

It is important to note that even though the applications can co-exist, jobs from the two applications should not be scheduled to run at the same time on the same systems. When both applications are run at the same time against the same resource, one or both will fail.

Solution

A software provider, "Symantec Software VSS Provider" is used for snapshot backups automatically when Backup Exec and Backup Exec System Recovery (BESR) coexist in the same system. For example, "Symantec Software VSS Provider" is used for snapshot backups of Exchange Information Store when BE and BESR coexist in Exchange 2007 server. (Figure 1)

To configure System provider explicitly, please refer the following instructions:

Edit the "Advanced Open File Option" section in the backup job properties for the Backup job to use the Microsoft Shadow Copy Provider explicitly. (Figure 2)

Explanations:

If the server has more than one provider registered on a Windows Server 2003 or 2008 based-computer, the Volume Shadow Copy Service takes a snapshot by selecting a provider in the following order by default:

1. Hardware provider
2. Software provider
3. System provider

"Symantec Software VSS Provider" mentioned above is registered by BESR. Running the "VSSADMIN LIST PROVIDERS" command on the server shows the presence of "Symantec Software VSS Provider" prior to "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider". (Figure 3)
