NOM data collection cause high CPU usage on NetBackup Master Server

Solution

For large to very large NetBackup domains where there are large number of media servers and drives, the default polling intervals used by NOM can be too aggressive and cause overlapping data collection operations. When this occurs, the NetBackup Master server may become over utilized and affect production backups.

SOLUTION:

Increase the polling interval values in the nbsl.xml file on the affected NetBackup master servers to a high enough value to prevent the overlapping collections.

Default File Location:
-- Unix: /usr/openv/var/global/nbsl.xml
-- Windows: C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\var\global\nbsl.xml

Default Settings below are in seconds:

NBU 6.0

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no" ?>
<Root>
<MediaManager DCPollingInterval="180" DCPollingIntervalDefault="180" MediaBlockSize="150"/>
<JobManager JobEventLogging="0"/>
<DeviceManager DCPollingInterval="10" DCPollingIntervalDefault="10"/>
<LogManager DCPollingInterval="10" DCPollingIntervalDefault="10"/>
<PolicyManager DCPollingInterval="10" DCPollingIntervalDefault="10"/>
<ServiceManager DCPollingInterval="10" DCPollingIntervalDefault="10"/>
<SystemInfo HostId="{A5D3994D-82F1-4CEC-A6F0-62EFD9D697AF}"/>
<Orb ConnectTimeout="20" RequestTimeout="600" ThreadCount="20"/>
<Evictor QueueMax="500" TimeMax="1440"/>
<NBNOS RequestTimeout="60"/>
</Root>

NBU 6.5

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no" ?>
<Root>
<MediaManager DCPollingInterval="180" DCPollingIntervalDefault="180" MediaBlockSize="150"/>
<DeviceManager DCPollingInterval="10" DCPollingIntervalDefault="10"/>
<LogManager DCPollingInterval="10" DCPollingIntervalDefault="10"/>
<PolicyManager DCPollingInterval="10" DCPollingIntervalDefault="10"/>
<ServiceManager DCPollingInterval="10" DCPollingIntervalDefault="10"/>
<SystemInfo HostId="{5FED6008-1DD2-11B2-B43E-67B326330C89}"/>
<Orb ConnectTimeout="20" RequestTimeout="600" ThreadCount="20"/>
<Evictor QueueMax="500" TimeMax="86400" TimeoutInSeconds="86400"/>
<NBNOS RequestTimeout="60"/>
<Heartbeat Period="60"/>
<AsyncClientCollector PollingInterval="180"/>
<JobProxy RequestTimeout="300"/>
</Root>

For example, to increase the collection interval for device polling from 10 seconds to 600 seconds, change the settings for DeviceManager.

Before:
<DeviceManager DCPollingInterval="10" DCPollingIntervalDefault="10"/>

After:
<DeviceManager DCPollingInterval="600" DCPollingIntervalDefault="600"/>

NOTE: By increasing the polling values, updates in the NOM GUI interface will out of date with those on the NetBackup Master server.
