How to schedule Live Debugging with Backup Exec for Windows Servers using the SGMon utility

Solution

The Backup Exec Debug Monitor (SGMon) is a diagnostic tool which captures debug/diagnostic output from Backup Exec and saves it in one debug log as <server name>SGMon.log.  SGMon captures debug data from the selected items when SGMon is open and running or when it is scheduled to run. By default, the logs are saved to the \Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\logs\ directory.

Steps to Schedule Live debugging using Sgmon :

1.  To open the Backup Exec Debug Monitor Console - SGMon:

  • For Backup Exec 12.5 and above:  From the Tools menu, click Support Utilities > Run the Debug Monitor for active debugging. (Figure 1)
  • For version 12.0:   Browse to \Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\SGMon.exe and run the executable.

2. Select the items to be captured for troubleshooting based on the issue which is occurring. More information can be found for each of the debugging options by clicking the <F1> Key when SGMon is in the active window. Make sure also to select capture to file. (Figure 2)

NOTE: Administrators must make sure SGMON remains running, otherwise the debugging will not run as scheduled.  Once scheduled, an attempt to close the SGMon utility will also display the following error (Figure 5): .
